 WELCOME!

I was instantly captivated by Baja Sur the moment I felt the warm desert air carry the sound of Pacific waves across my skin. Here, where the rugged Sonoran Desert meets endless ocean, time follows the rhythm of spectacular sunrises that paint the sky directly in front of you each morning. Beach walks stretch for miles with only the occasional surfer breaking the solitude, and the raw landscape has this profound way of calling me to simply stop and breathe. The terrain has remained untouched for millennia, offering you natural surroundings without any artifice, where simple luxury means nothing more than watching the sun rise from your private terrace. I return whenever my soul craves space to expand, always collecting smooth stones from hidden beaches where the ocean breeze reminds you to breathe deeper and embrace the unhurried magic of desert meets sea.

The information below is to help you with your trip planning and your time before and after our retreat. It is based on my discoveries and preferences with the intention of giving you a visit that is high on culture and experience. Modify to your budget and personal preferences. If you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to reach out!

Happy Planning!

Arrival and departure TIMES

We welcome you to NEST, Baja on Monday at 4:00 p.m. Our program will begin with a short time to settle in, followed by an opening ceremony and our first celebratory dinner together.

Our session will finish on Saturday by 11:00 am. Remember that the NEST is a quiet, remote sanctuary, an hour and a half away from San Juan del Cabo (airport). I recommend that you do not plan a flight earlier than 3:00 pm., or better yet, find a cute place to stay in San Juan del Cabo for a few nights, before making your way home.

See below for important transportation information.

GETTING TO BAJA

The retreat is being held in a remote part of Baja California Sur, Mexico, approximately 1.5 hours from the airport.

1) San Jose del Cabo - airport code SJD

This is a major airport with lots of flight options. Upon arrival, you will immediately go through customs. After this, you will collect bags and then go through a second line run by the Department of Agriculture, where your bags may be scanned to ensure you are not bringing in fruits and vegetables.

Then you will exit the arrivals hall. It is not uncommon for you to be approached by kind but forceful salespeople with “assistance” who would like to direct you to go out the left or right door, or to offer you a car service or hotel reservation as you exit. Please note: EITHER door will bring you out. (There is no difference except where their car/hotel counters are located). Simply graciously thank and ignore those approaching you.

If you are meeting prearranged transport, please allow enough time to go through customs; the length of the line and the time to exit can depend on the number of flights arriving all at the same time.

STAYING IN San Jose Del Cabo or Cabo San Lucas

When people ask me about the difference between San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas, I always say they’re like two sisters who couldn’t be more different. San José is the quiet, artsy one—cobblestone streets, colourful galleries, little cafés where you can linger with a glass of wine and watch the world go by. It feels like Mexico still whispers through its walls. Cabo San Lucas, on the other hand, is the wild extrovert. Boats line the marina, music spills from the beach bars, and the energy is buzzing well into the night. It’s where you go for adventure—the famous Arch, water taxis, snorkelling, and tequila shots on Medano Beach. San José is where you exhale. Cabo San Lucas is where you let loose.

If you are looking for a hotel in San Jose del Cabo, this Drift Hotel has caught my attention.

GETTING to the NEST

ARRIVING BY CAR

To come directly to the Nest, please follow directions to this address. Please note, however, you will NOT need a car while on the property.

GROUP TRANSIT - $50 each way

We are looking into coordinating group transit for you in order to make things easier, as you do not require a car while on the property. Please check back here for more information on the meetup location and cost.

Pick up:  Assume we will be picking up at the SJD airport on November 3rd at 2 p.m. - Please wait indoors in the arrivals area by the rows of chairs. (Before you exit into the throngs of people and dance-party music).

Return: Assume we will drop off at the SJD airport on November 8th by 1 pm - more information to follow

WEATHER

November is a great time to visit Baja. Highs could be around 80°F during the day and lows around 63°F at night.

Expect sunny, blue skies during the day and cool, clear and breezy evenings. Rain is extremely rare at this time.

What to pack

As the property is in a remote location, built into the sand, please note that there are uneven paths and stairs to your accommodation. Expect that you will have to carry your luggage up a flight of stairs or two. Pack accordingly!! I am a dedicated carry-on luggage-only kind of person.

at the location

Here are a few things to note:

  • There are hairdryers in all the bathrooms

  • There is shampoo, conditioner, soap, and towels for your stay

  • Bathrobes are provided in each room

deciding what clothes to bring

Comfort: Casual, comfortable clothes are encouraged. The hotel has a quiet luxury, is built into the landscape, and is surrounded by sand and ocean air. Feel free to wear what gives you joy, and bring your active-wear or yoga-wear for relaxing and for moving around (like beach walks or morning stretching.)

Breezy Shade: We will be dining al fresco for ALL of our meals, as is the custom in this part of Mexico. The air will be cool as soon as the sun dips over the hills. Please come with a sweater, warm wrap or little puffy jacket. Please note: we will be conducting a morning sunrise ceremony and a full-moon ceremony on the beach or on the yoga shala. It will be breezy, sandy and glorious.

You are divine: While practical clothing is necessary, there is also space to bring whatever connects you with the remembering that you are entering sacred space as the divine feminine. You, like the sunrise and the full moon, are a sacred part of the Universal constellation. On our last evening, you will step fully into your re-imagined self with ceremony and intention. Please bring something beautiful and beach-appropriate that you would like to wear to mark this sacred occasion.

Pool: There is a beautiful, heated pool on the property for swimming and lounging around.

Currency/payment options

The Mexican peso is the currency of Mexico. Its currency code is MXN and its symbol is $. To distinguish it from other currencies using the $ symbol, the peso is sometimes written as M$, MX$, or MEX$

Mexico is a digital payments society- you can use your credit cards in all grocery stores, restaurants and shops. Pesos are necessary in more remote areas or for roadside stalls. Prices are often listed in both Mexican Pesos and American Dollars. Tips are accepted in Pesos or American dollars. When paying on a credit card, it is generally in your favour to be charged in the currency of the country you are visiting (Pesos) as opposed to the converted rate (which will use an exchange rate that favours the seller).

The only additional expense, once you have arrived on the property, will be any alcohol that you wish to consume with dinner.

SIM or e-SIM card for your cell phone

Travelling “old school” (without using your cell phone) can be very freeing.  It can help you stay in the moment.  It can nudge you to engage with locals for directions, suggestions, help, and advice. And, travelling with cell service to your phone can be very comforting.  It can give you confidence knowing that if you need to, you can find directions, make a call, and reach out to people you know for assistance.

So when travelling somewhere outside of your usual cellular service (and into roaming service), you have a choice to make.

  • A: Commit to not using cell service at all, and only use apps when you can connect to Wifi.

  • B: Accept that using your phone would only be in an emergency, and you’ll pay the roaming charges incurred.

  • C: Sign up for an international plan with your regular cellular vendor.  This might be upgrading your monthly plan for a specific period of time.  Or it might be that on days that you use your phone abroad, you pay a daily rate.  (ex. T-Mobile is known for a plan where your phone “just works” no matter where you are.  Verizon offers a daily TravelPass.)

  • D: Buy a short-term plan from a cellular vendor that is local to where you’re going.  This is often notably less expensive than option C (unless you already have a travel plan with the likes of T-Mobile), ex. Service covering all of Europe, for 30 days, with 5 GB of data is approximately $20USD.

Let’s talk more about option D.  What makes your cell phone work with your specific phone number and password is a SIM card.  You might be familiar with using the end of a paper clip to press a hole on the side of your phone for a little tray to pop out, with an actual card in it, smaller than your thumbnail.  That’s a physical SIM card.  Today’s advancements have created a different way to accomplish what the SIM card does, without needing an actual card.  It is programmed directly into your phone.  So it’s an electronic SIM card, also known as an eSIM.

Travellers used to have to buy a travel SIM, take their home SIM out of their phone (and tape it inside the case so as not to lose it!), and put the travel SIM in, and then reverse the finicky process when they got home.  With eSIM, we can buy a travel eSIM online, download it to our phone, and toggle it on and off in our phone’s settings.  So much better!

To check if your phone is compatible with this new technology, see if your make and model is on this list.  You can also go to your Settings on your phone, find the Cellular section, and look for the term SIM.  If you see an option to “Add eSIM,” then the eSIM option should work for you.

Whether you buy a traditional card or an electronic card, you’ll have choices for a) location (ex. just Mexico,  all of North America, global), b) duration (ex. 7 days, 15 days, 30 days), and c) gigabytes of data (ex. 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 20)   Note that almost all plans allow you to add days and add data, but check beforehand how much those “top ups” might cost.

I recommend the company Airalo as a place to buy an eSIM.  Airalo is well-established, is highly rated, and provides reliable cell coverage.  And you can choose to have prices in different currencies (ex. USD, CAD.)   When you check out, you can use the code TANIA9228 for $3 off.  Airalo has lots of instructions, videos, and customer service to help you make the eSIM work smoothly so you can fully enjoy your trip!

adaptors

Adaptors

Mexico uses the same Type A (two flat parallel pins) and Type B (two flat parallel pins and a grounding pin) electrical outlets and a similar voltage (127V) to Canada and the United States.

frequently-used travel apps

Here are some of my favourite Apps that make getting around and sightseeing a lot easier. You may want to download them now and get familiar with them.

Uber

Uber is a cost-effective way to travel through San Juan del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas. There are restrictions that will prevent them from picking up at the Airport or a Resort. However, before any Uber ride in any country, you should turn on your safety preferences.

To enable Uber's safety preferences, open the Uber app, tap the Account icon (bottom right), then select Settings > Safety > Safety Preferences to access features like PIN verification or audio recording. You can enable PIN verification to ensure you enter the correct car or set up audio recording for every trip or only at night for added peace of mind.

Local Taxi Companies:

You can call a local company directly to book a ride. Taxis in Cabo San Lucas do not use meters, so you should always agree on the price with the driver before beginning your trip. Cash only: Most taxis do not accept credit cards, so be prepared to pay with cash (Mexican pesos or U.S. dollars)

Some options include:

  • Taxis Colectivos: +52 (624) 100 2152

  • Coordinadora de Transportes Sitio Suchpaca: +52 (624) 144 4590

  • Taxi Cabó: +52 (624) 191 7678

From the Airport

Official airport taxis: You must purchase a prepaid taxi ticket from the taxi booth located in the Arrivals Hall. After paying and receiving a voucher, you can proceed to the official taxi queue outside.

  • Pre-booked private transfer: Many travellers prefer to pre-book a private or shared shuttle service online for convenience. This can sometimes be a more economical option, and your driver will be waiting for you outside the terminal. Reputable services include SJD Taxi, Cabo Shuttle Services, and Transcabo.

Google Maps offline

Walking is the best way to get anywhere and to sightsee in the Old Town of San Juan del Cabo. Did you know that you can use Google Maps even if you don’t have any data? Just be sure to open the map and search your destination while you still have access to wifi. Here’s more information on how to set it up.

tips for jet lag

My tip: sleep on the plane, drink lots of water, and once you arrive, immediately set your clock for local time.

  • DO NOT keep referencing what time it is at home… be present in your new time zone.

  • Stay awake the first day until after dinner, I do a lot of walking to keep myself from trying to get a nap in…. S

  • et the alarm for a decent wake-up time the next morning… and hopefully you are on your way!
